Lane College Director of Athletics Derrick Burroughs announced the hiring of Perry ”Bubba” Cummings as the new Head Coach for the Dragon softball program.
“We are excited for Coach Bubba to take over our softball program at Lane,” said Burroughs. “As we moved through the process of hiring a new coach, it was evident that he had a passion for the game and this area, as well as a knowledge of the current team. We feel confident he will continue and build on the current success the softball program has experienced in recent years.”
Cummings served as an assistant last season at Lane, mostly overseeing hitters and helping lead the Dragons to their best finish in school history. The 2024 team set a program record with 132 stolen bases. The team won 32 games and finished as SIAC runner up.
Prior to his time at Lane, Cummings served as head coach at Jackson State Community College. He has spent the last 35 years coaching the game of softball including time at the recreational level, travel ball, high school, and collegiality.
Cummings is a lifelong resident of West Tennessee. He was an All-State pitcher at White Station High School before moving on to pitch for the Tigers at Memphis State University. After his time at Memphis State, he moved to Jackson for work and has spent the past 40 years in the Hub City.
